In 2016, we surveyed our residents and gathered the following information about the population we are currently serving. Of the more than 3,100 residents we were serving at that time, 41% were children.
Of the adults, 55% were female and 42% were male. Sixty percent (60%) of all households were families with children. Twenty-four percent (25%) of the families with children living in mutual housing had a single parent head of household. Thirty-six percent (35%) of the families with children had two heads of household.
The household incomes were very low in general, with an average household income of $23,506 and an average income per adult of $14,335. A full 85% of all resident households had incomes below 50% of area median income adjusted for household size. Fifty percent (50%) of all households had an income below 30% of area median income adjusted for household size.
Of all households living in mutual housing, 65% relied exclusively on employment earnings as an income source. Sources of other household income were as follows: 11% of all households received TANF. 19% of all households received Social Security support. SSI was the most significant source of other income with 24% of all households receiving SSI.
