In 2012, we surveyed our residents and gathered the following information about the population we are currently serving. Of the more than 2,600 residents we were serving at that time, 42% were children.
Of the adults, 55% were female and 45% were male. Fifty-seven percent (57%) of all households were families with children. Fourty-four percent (44%) of the families with children living in mutual housing had a single parent head of household. Fifty-six percent (56%) of the families with children had two heads of household.
The household incomes were very low in general, with an average household income of $21,639 and an average income per adult of $13,670. A full 88% of all resident households had incomes below 50% of area median income adjusted for household size. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of all households had an income below 30% of area median income adjusted for household size.
Of all households living in mutual housing, 39% relied exclusively on employment earnings as an income source. Sources of other household income were as follows: 55% of all households received TANF, SSI or Social Security support. SSI was the most significant source of other income with 14% of all households receiving SSI. Although public assistance accounted for a large percentage of income sources, 29% of all households received a combination of earned income from employment and income from public assistance sources.
