In 2017, we surveyed our residents and gathered the following information about the population we are currently serving. Of the nearly 3,200 residents we were serving at that time, 40% were children.
Of the adults, 54% were female and 44% were male. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of all households were families with children. Twenty-four percent (24%) of the families with children living in mutual housing had a single parent head of household. Thirty-four percent (34%) of the families with children had two heads of household.
The household incomes were very low in general, with an average household income of $25,313 and an average income per adult of $15,572. A full 79% of all resident households had incomes below 50% of area median income adjusted for household size. Fifty-two percent (52%) of all households had an income below 30% of area median income adjusted for household size.
Of all households living in mutual housing, 69% relied exclusively on employment earnings as an income source. Sources of other household income were as follows: 9% of all households received TANF. 19% of all households received Social Security support. SSI was the most significant source of other income with 24% of all households receiving SSI.
