Mutual Housing Board of Directors

Board Members are the backbone of Sacramento|Yolo Mutual Housing Association, and they contribute greatly to the success of our organization. They attend an annual board retreat to work with staff in setting goals for each subsequent year, and many board members also serve on committees, such as the Finance, Site Acquisition, Audit and Resident Issues Committees. Board experience is highlighted below:

Mindy Romero, Chair, is a resident leader from the Tremont Green community in Davis and previously was active in Yolo Mutual Housing Association. She is a researcher at the Center for Regional Change at UC Davis and recently completed her doctoral studies in the sociology department. Mindy is a member of the Executive, Audit and Site Acquisition Committees and has served on the board for three years.

Denise McCoy, Vice Chair, is in home real estate sales. She is also a certified Home From Work Housing Initiative trainer and a certified Home Buying Specialist for Nehemiah Corporation. She has 10 years’ experience in property management and resident services. Denise is an active volunteer for the fundraising team at Mutual Housing, is a member of the Executive Committee and has served on the board for three years. She serves as a volunteer or board member on several community nonprofits and she is an award-winning speaker with Toastmasters.

Jennifer Gore, Interim Treasurer, is an attorney representing public agencies with the firm Miller & Owen. She provides counsel to Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), including advising them on their regional housing needs analysis. She received her JD from University of Pacific's McGeorge School of Law in 2004. Jennifer serves on Mutual Housing Executive, Audit and Site Acquisition Committees. She has served on the Board of Directors for three years.

Jack Ledyard, Secretary, is retired from the University of California, Davis, and is a resident leader at Westerner Mobile Home Park.  He is a member of the Executive Committee has served on the board for one year.

John Garcia is a resident leader at Owendale community in Davis. He is employed by UC Davis Department of Land, Air and Water Resources as a graduate researcher. He is a student in the Ag and Environmental Chemistry Graduate Group at University of California, Davis.  He has served on the board for three years.

Greg Chew is the former chair of a large Portland-based housing nonprofit. He currently serves as the senior planner for transit oriented development and housing at Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG). Greg contributes his expertise and facilitates relationships with public and private organizations involved in transit-oriented development. Greg is a former chair of the Mutual Housing board and currently chairs the Site Acquisition Committee.  He’s been a member of the Board of Directors for five years.

Kevin McCarty has served on Sacramento City Council since 2004. He represents District 6 where SMHA's Mutual Housing at Lemon Hill is located. He is a former Commissioner on the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency Commission. He stays connected with residents of Lemon Hill and Mutual Housing residents in his district, areas where the agency is most active in its community leadership and youth leadership work. Councilmember McCarty was an early advocate for a proposed city ordinance requiring all rental property in Sacramento to be inspected by city staff and requiring owners to bring their properties up to livability standards. A former staff to the Lieutenant Governor of California, he currently serves as the senior advisor to Preschool California, a statewide nonprofit organization that works to expand quality, state-funded preschool programs. He has served on Mutual Housing’s board for six years and is a government appointee to the board.

Colin Bailey is a staff attorney with Legal Services of Northern California, an antipoverty, legal aid nonprofit.  Colin provides no-cost civil legal services to empower low-income individuals and communities and the organizations that serve them to identify and overcome the root causes of poverty.  Colin received his JD from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, where he completed the Program in Public Interest Law & Policy and participated in the Critical Race Studies concentration.  Colin serves on Mutual Housing’s site acquisition and finance committees. Colin joined the board of directors in February 2011.

Chrisana Newbury is a resident leader from Moore Village Community in Davis. She is a preschool teacher. Chrisana serves on the Executive Committee as an at-large member as well as the Site Acquisition and Resident Impact Committees. She has been on the board for two years.

JiaLi Wu is a resident leader from Mutual Housing at Lemon Hill.  She is a community college student.
