Demographic Breakdown of Residents

In 2010, we surveyed our residents and gathered the following information about the population we are currently serving. Of the 2,570 residents we were serving at that time, 44% were children.

Of the adults, 57% were female, 43% were male. Sixty-three percent (63%) of all households were families with children. Fifty-four percent (54%) of the families with children living in mutual housing had a single parent head of household. Forty-six percent (46%) of the families with children had two heads of household.

The household incomes were very low in general, with an average household income of $23,108 and an average income per adult of $14,020. A full seventy percent (70%) of all resident households had incomes below 50% of area median income adjusted for household size. Thirty-six percent (36%) of all households had an income below 30% of area median income adjusted for household size.

Of all households living in mutual housing, 40% relied exclusively on employment earnings as an income source. Sources of other household income were as follows: 48% of all households received TANF, SSI or General Assistance support. TANF was the most significant source of other income with 22% of all households receiving TANF. Although public assistance accounted for a large percentage of income sources, 31% of all households received a combination of earned income from employment and income from public assistance sources.
